Neonatal varicella: a rare case

Introduction: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection in pregnant women the last three weeks of pregnancy or days before delivery causes neonatal varicella. It is rare newborns and infants due to passive immunity received from mother. Thus we report a case varicella for an educational purpose. Case report: A 14-day-old girl was referred Department Pediatrics with red rash all over her body. The begins on face subsequently spreads across body fever four appearance rash. During third trimester pregnancy, patient's mother had patient delivered vaginally by midwife at full term, weighing 3,400 g. Macules, papules, pustules, vesicles, multiple number, distinct, miliary guttate size, universal distribution, were identified physical examination facial, thoracic, upper extremities region et inferior bilaterally. Tzank test found multinucleated giant cells. Skin biopsy stratum spinosum edema powdered lymphocyte inflammatory cells (typical varicella). Treatment intravenous acyclovir showed improvement after 5 days. Conclusion: VZV generates wide spectrum clinical symptoms fetus newborn can be life-threatening condition. Early recognition who are risk very necessary so that prophylaxis treatment started immediately
